Orapronobis is part of the Non-Conventional Food Plants (Pancs). Its scientific name is Pereskia aculeata and, in Brazil, it is quite common in the state of Minas Gerais.
The popular name ora-pro-nóbis comes from the Latin “pray for us”. It is believed that the plant was named in such a way because, in the colonial period, miners harvested Panc during masses, as it grew in the enclosures of churches, but the priests did not allow the population to harvest them.
It is a plant with dark green leaves rich in proteins, neutral flavor and soft texture. Highly nutritious, it is considered a superfood.
In addition to the high concentration of proteins, it is a source of vitamins A, C and complex B, calcium, phosphorus and iron.
